Steigenberger Cecil Hotel

Sofitel Cecil HotelThe colonial style Steigenberger Cecil Hotel, built in 1929 by the French-Egyptian Jewish Metzger family, stands in the heart of Alexandria City with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Located in Saad Zaghloul Square in front of La Corniche, the Cecil was built as a romantic hotel, which has been favored by many celebrities over the years.  High profile guests have included authors Agatha Christie and Somerset Maugham, singers Om Kalthoum and Josephine Baker, Henry Moore, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Montgomery and Al Capone to name but a few.

During World War II, the hotel was also the location of the British Intelligence Headquarters.

After the revolution in 1952, it was seized by the Egyptian government and the Metzger family was expelled from the country five years later.  In 2007, after a lengthy court battle, legal ownership of the hotel was returned to the Metzger family, who subsequently sold it to the Egyptian government.

The Cecil is now managed by Sofitel and offers 85 rooms.
